History of Pocketbike Racing![]() The pocketbike, also known as minimoto or mini-bike, was created in Japan in the 1970s. Gradually, its popularity as an inexpensive, exciting racing vehicle spread, and it became one of the fastest-growing two-wheeled motor sports in Europe. Typically powered by average garden tool engines, there was definitely room for development. And in the 1980s and 90s, Italian and Dutch mechanics transformed them into powerful racers capable of reaching speeds of 60 miles per hour. Today, pocketbikes are raced in several different classes and by children from age 7 to adults. As European television stations grant more airtime to the sport, awareness of pocketbike racing is also growing in the US. With the help of US National and Regional Racing Associations, Pocketbike Dealers, and US Importers, American pocketbike racers hope that attention will grow.
